Laboratory for 2D Quantum Materials (2DQM)

About the PI:  Swastik Kar (Google Scholar) is an experimental condensed matter physicist interested in the science and applications of 2D Quantum Materials. He is the Director of Northeastern’s Experiential Quantum Advancement Laboratories (EQUAL), the Deputy Director of Northeastern’s Quantum Materials and Sensing Institute (QMSI), and is involved in multiple quantum-related research, education and infrastructure intitiatives at Northeastern. Kar received his PhD in Physics in 2004 from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He pursued posdoctoral research positions from 2003-2004 at the Universität Karlsruhe, and from 2004-2008 at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). From 2008-2010, he joined RPI as a Research Assistant Professor of Physics, and in 2009, as an Adjunct Faculty of Physics. In 2010, he joined Northeastern University as an Assistant Professor of Physics, where he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2016, and Professor of Physics in 2023. Kar has received several research, teaching, and research-translation awards and recognitions, serves on the Editorial Board of Materials for Quantum Technologies (IOP), and co-founded Guardion, a start-up translating NSF-funded research to develop multi-functional sensors and detectors. He strives to create a discrimination-free, inclusive academic environment that celebrates diversity and promotes the under-represented in STEM.
